The Xavier Award 

IMPORTANT: Because of Covid-19, the 2021 Conference will be online-only. There will be no Xavier Award next year but we're looking forward to seeing your entries in 2022.

The Xavier Award was founded in 2018, by delegates of the Independent Shoemakers’ Conference to commemorate orthopaedic shoemaker David Xavier – stalwart of the footwear trade, orthopaedic footwear specialist and a conference regular who generously shared his extensive skills and knowledge.

Founded in Memory of David Xavier

To create a pair of shoes or boots in any style, to accommodate a fitting or orthopaedic foot problem AND a portfolio detailing the problem to be accommodated, the journey of making and the finished footwear​

The Brief

Your entry must demonstrate at least THREE of the following skills:

  • Last making / alteration

  • Designing

  • Pattern making

  • Closing

  • Lasting

  • Attaching soles and heels

  • Finishing / Shoe Room

The Xavier Award is open to all footwear trainees, apprentices and students who attend the Independent Shoemakers’ Conference held every February.
